What are adjustment difficulties?

Adjustment difficulties are strong, persistent reactions to an identifiable change in your life. Mood drops, worry increases, sleep and concentration suffer, and everyday tasks feel heavier than the situation seems to justify. The trigger is known – that is what distinguishes this from a depressive episode that appears without context.

The difference from a diagnosed adjustment disorder is a matter of degree and duration. Difficulties become a disorder when functioning at work or in relationships is clearly impaired and the reaction does not settle after the change itself is over. Both are treatable, and early support shortens the process considerably.

Why change costs more strength today

Adaptation needs reserve, and reserve is exactly what is scarce. People with high responsibility manage transitions for their teams while going through their own. Pressure between career and family means two systems reorganise at once. And rapid change through artificial intelligence and social transformation makes change permanent rather than episodic, so the nervous system never reaches the calm phase in which adaptation normally completes.

We therefore work on the transition and on your capacity to carry it – the logic of the 180 degree model: understand the mechanism, restore stability, then set the new direction.

Typical triggers

New role or promotion

More responsibility, new expectations, and the feeling of having to prove yourself from the beginning again.

Relocation and expatriation

A move to Berlin or Zurich with a new language, administration, school system and no established network.

Separation and family change

Divorce, a new family constellation, or children leaving home, with grief and logistics at the same time.

Illness and diagnosis

Your own illness or that of a close person, with a changed body, changed plans and new uncertainty.

Restructuring and job loss

Reorganisation, redundancy or an unwanted change of role that questions status and identity.

Loss and bereavement

The death of a close person, where mourning and everyday obligations have to run in parallel.

Frequently asked questions

What are adjustment difficulties?

Adjustment difficulties are disproportionate and persistent reactions to an identifiable change: a new role, a move, separation, illness, loss or restructuring. Typical are low mood, worry, irritability, sleep problems and a feeling of not coping – beyond what the situation would normally require.

When does it become an adjustment disorder?

When the symptoms clearly impair work, relationships or daily functioning and persist for weeks after the change. The transition is gradual, which is why an assessment is more useful than self-diagnosis.

Does it resolve on its own?

Often, yes: many people adapt within a few weeks. It becomes a problem when avoidance sets in, when sleep and mood stay disturbed, or when alcohol, overwork or withdrawal become the way of coping. That is the point to seek support.

I moved to Berlin or Zurich for work. Is that a reason for therapy?

Relocation is one of the most underestimated stressors: language, administration, a lost network and a partner or children adapting at the same time. Short, focused support at that point often prevents months of strain.

How long does support usually take?

For a clearly defined change, six to fifteen sessions are often sufficient. If several changes overlap, or if earlier losses are reactivated, the process takes longer and we plan it in stages.

Can we work while the change is still happening?

Yes, and that is usually the best moment. Working during the transition protects sleep, decisions and relationships instead of repairing them afterwards.

Let us talk about your situation.

Transitions are easier to shape than to repair. A first conversation shows what you need right now.
