What does low self-esteem mean?

Low self-esteem means that your own value is rated permanently lower than your performance, your relationships and the feedback of others would justify. Typical features are a harsh inner critic, shame, the feeling of never being enough and the expectation of being rejected. Self-worth is not a character trait: it is learned in relationships and experiences – and that is exactly why it can be changed.

Trauma describes the consequences of events that overwhelmed your capacity to cope: accidents, violence, medical emergencies, loss, or years of devaluation at work or in the family. The nervous system stays on alert, the body reacts faster than any argument, and many people conclude that something is wrong with them rather than with what happened to them.

Why self-worth and trauma belong together

Distressing experiences rarely damage only the memory. They also change the inner image of who you are: not safe, not valuable, not allowed to need anything. Shame keeps this image in place, avoidance protects it, and performance becomes the only accepted proof of worth. This is why treatment addresses both layers – the processing of what happened and the rebuilding of self-worth in daily life.

People with high responsibility are affected more often than the outside picture suggests. Pressure between family and career, permanent availability and rapid change through artificial intelligence and social transformation increase the load precisely where the inner critic is already loud. Competence remains visible from outside while self-doubt grows inside. Our work follows the 180 degree model: understand the mechanism, stabilise the system, then change direction.

Typical signs

Harsh inner critic

A constant inner commentary that devalues results, appearance and decisions, no matter how good the outcome is.

Shame and withdrawal

Avoiding visibility, comparing yourself to others, pulling back from contact in order not to be exposed.

Praise does not land

Recognition is explained away, criticism is remembered for months. Feedback confirms the negative picture either way.

Performance as proof of worth

Perfectionism, overwork and difficulty setting limits, because rest feels like a loss of value rather than recovery.

Intrusive memories

Images, sounds or body sensations that return unbidden, nightmares, sudden tension in situations that resemble the original event.

Alarm or numbness

Being constantly on guard, startling easily, or the opposite: feeling flat, distant and disconnected from your own emotions.

Frequently asked questions

Can low self-esteem really be changed?

Yes. Self-worth is learned, not a fixed character trait. In therapy we identify the experiences and inner rules that keep the devaluation alive, and we build new corrective experiences step by step. Most people notice a first shift in how they treat themselves within a few weeks.

What is the difference between low self-esteem and depression?

Low self-esteem describes a stable negative view of your own worth. Depression is a clinical condition with lowered mood, loss of drive, sleep and concentration problems. The two often occur together, which is why we assess both carefully before we plan treatment.

Do I have to describe the traumatic event in detail?

No. Trauma-focused work always starts with stabilisation and only moves to the memory itself when you feel ready and safe. You control the pace, the depth and the amount of detail at every point.

How long does the process take?

For circumscribed topics ten to twenty sessions are often enough. Long-standing devaluation or complex trauma histories usually need more time. After the assessment you receive a realistic estimate instead of an open-ended plan.

Does online therapy work for self-esteem and trauma?

Yes, for most people. Video sessions are well suited to reflection, skills training and transfer into everyday life, and they make continuity possible across cities and countries. With severe acute symptoms we recommend starting in person in Berlin or Zurich.
