What is a mental block?

A mental block is a temporary loss of access to your own abilities. The knowledge is there, the goal is clear, and yet starting, deciding or delivering becomes impossible. Typical accompaniments are circular thinking, physical tension, a blank mind under observation, and a sharp inner critic that comments on every attempt.

It is not a lack of discipline. Under high arousal the brain prioritises defence over complex thinking. Understanding this changes the strategy: not more effort, but less threat.

Why blocks are becoming more common

People with high responsibility carry many open decisions at once, and every unfinished item consumes attention. Pressure between career and family removes the recovery windows in which the system would normally settle. And rapid change through artificial intelligence and social transformation means the standard by which performance is judged keeps moving, so nothing ever feels finished or safe.

We therefore look at the whole configuration – load, recovery, expectations, self-image and environment – in line with the 180 degree model: understand the mechanism, lower the arousal, then change direction.

How blocks show up

Writing and thinking block

The document stays empty, the concept does not come together, every sentence is deleted before it is finished.

Decision block

Options are analysed endlessly, the decision is postponed, and the delay itself becomes the main stressor.

Performance and exam block

Knowledge is available in preparation and unavailable in the situation, in exams, pitches or board presentations.

Speaking block

Sudden emptiness in meetings or on stage, a tight throat, the voice under tension.

Starting block

Small tasks are done, the important one is avoided, the day ends with movement but no progress.

Emotional block

Numbness instead of motivation, no access to interest, joy or ambition even for things that used to matter.

Who we work with

Executives and founders

People who decide under uncertainty and whose standstill immediately affects a whole team.

Experts and creatives

Professionals whose work depends on original thinking and who are stuck between quality standards and deadlines.

Students and academics

Adults with exam anxiety or an unfinished thesis that has grown into a symbol of failure.

Parents in demanding roles

People whose cognitive reserve is used up by two full-time systems at the same time.

After overload or illness

Adults returning to work after burnout, depression or a medical event, with reduced tolerance for pressure.

Internationals in Berlin and Zurich

People performing in a second language and an unfamiliar work culture, where the block is easily mistaken for lack of competence.

First conversation

Where the block appears, how long it has lasted, and what it currently costs you.

Analysis

Triggers, physiology, inner rules and the situations in which the block reliably disappears.

3

Unblocking

Arousal regulation, radical reduction of the first step, and exposure to the avoided situation in a controlled way.

4

Stabilisation

Routines for concentration and recovery, and work on the pattern underneath so the block does not return.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a mental block?

A mental block is a state in which you know what to do but cannot start, decide or perform. Attention narrows, the body tenses, and thinking circles. Physiologically it is a protective reaction: the system rates the situation as threatening and switches from problem solving to defence.

Why does willpower not help?

Because pressure is the trigger, not the solution. Additional pressure raises arousal further and deepens the block. What works is lowering arousal first, then reducing the task to a first step small enough that the protective reaction is not activated.

Is a block the same as procrastination?

They overlap but are not identical. Procrastination is a pattern of postponing; a block is the acute inability to act. Chronic blocks often produce procrastination as a coping strategy, which is why we treat both together.

Can blocks be resolved permanently?

In most cases the acute block dissolves within a few sessions. Whether it stays away depends on the underlying pattern: perfectionism, fear of judgement, exhaustion or earlier experiences of failure. We work on that level so the effect holds.

Do blocks have physical causes?

They can. Sleep debt, pain, hormonal changes, medication and untreated attention difficulties all lower the threshold. That is why the assessment covers physical factors and, where indicated, we cooperate with medical colleagues.

Does online work for this topic?

Very well. Blocks show up in your own working environment, and video sessions let us work exactly there – at your desk, with your calendar and your real tasks in front of you.

Let us talk about your situation.

Blocks lose their power once the mechanism is visible. One conversation is enough to start.
