Concentration and phobias – how they connect
Concentration is the ability to hold attention deliberately and screen out distraction. A phobia is a marked, persistent fear of a specific object or situation that leads to avoidance. The two frequently occur together, because anxiety binds attention: if you are internally on alert, you have less capacity for the task itself.
We therefore do not treat the symptom alone but first clarify what drives concentration and fear: sleep, stress, mood, an attention disorder, or a concrete and highly treatable phobia.
Why concentration suffers today
People with high responsibility work in constantly interrupted environments, and every interruption costs minutes of refocusing. Pressure between career and family shortens the sleep that concentration is built on. And rapid change through artificial intelligence and social transformation creates a stream of information and comparison that pulls attention outward and fuels the fear of falling behind.
We therefore look at load, recovery, environment and anxiety together – the logic of the 180 degree model: understand the mechanism, stabilise the system, then change direction.
Typical signs
Mind wandering
Thoughts drift, what you read does not stick, and simple tasks take twice as long.
Easily distracted
Every message and every noise interrupts. Deep, focused work barely happens any more.
Specific phobia
Strong fear of concrete triggers such as heights, flying, injections, animals or enclosed spaces, with avoidance.
Social phobia
Fear of judgement in meetings, presentations or conversations, often with physical symptoms.
Agoraphobia and panic
Fear of situations with no quick exit, such as crowds or public transport.
Avoidance
Feared situations are worked around. It relieves in the short term while the fear grows over time.

Frequently asked questions
Are concentration problems and phobias the same thing?
No, but they are often connected. Anxiety binds attention: if you are internally on alert, you cannot concentrate well. Conversely, lasting difficulty concentrating produces fear of failure. We therefore clarify both and treat whichever carries the larger share.
Where do sudden concentration problems come from?
Common causes are sleep deprivation, chronic stress, depression, anxiety, thyroid or hormonal changes, and undiagnosed ADHD. The assessment separates temporary exhaustion from a cause that needs treatment.
What exactly is a phobia?
A phobia is a marked, persistent fear of a specific object or situation that is out of proportion to the real danger and leads to avoidance. Typical forms are specific phobias, social phobia and agoraphobia. All are considered highly treatable.
How are phobias treated?
Most effectively with exposure: in small, well-prepared steps you approach what you fear until the anxiety subsides. You set the pace and the order, and we prepare each step carefully.
How quickly does treatment work?
Specific phobias often improve markedly within a few sessions. Concentration problems take as long as the cause takes: sleep and stress faster, ADHD or depression longer.
Does it work online?
Yes. Concentration training and much of anxiety treatment work very well by video, and many exposure exercises take place in your everyday life anyway.
